Free Zipper Window Pattern Template (PDF Download)

Free Zipper Window Pattern Template (PDF Download)

If you’ve ever wanted to add a neat zipper pocket to your handmade bag or pouch, this free template will make your life so much easier!

I’ve created a Zipper Window Pattern Template (PDF) that helps you mark and sew perfect zipper openings every time. You can now download it for free right here on my website! 🎉

This zipper window template helps you install a zipper wherever you like. Make your zipper window and use it to place the zipper where you want.

This zipper window is suitable for an 18 cm (7”) ready-made zipper or zippers by the meter/yard. If you you want to install longer or shorter zipper just make the zipper window longer or smaller, you can adjust it to the lenght of your zipper.

The finished pocket size will measure approximately 14.5 × 21 cm (5 7/8” x 8 1/4”).

Choose a slightly heavier fabric for the lining (e.g., unbleached cotton/linen down proof). If you plan to use quilting cotton, use also interfacing/stabilizer.

Print this zipper window template on thicker paper and cut out the zipper window. This will be your pattern piece for the zipper pocket lining.

The zipper pocket lining can be the same size as your paper (A4 or US Letter) or slightly larger. It’s important to have enough fabric above and on both sides of the zipper window to stitch the pocket closed.

How to Use the Template

Print the PDF on thicker paper (A4 or US Letter).

Cut out the zipper window opening.

Place the template on your fabric and mark the window position.

Sew and install your zipper following your usual method.

Draw the cutting line in the center of the rectangle and mark V-shapes at both ends. This line should be 1 cm (3/4”) shorter than the pocket window.

Stitch along the rectangle.

Cut along the middle line and through the V-shapes.

Pull the pocket lining through the zipper window and press it flat with a hot iron.

Place your zipper in the opening and stitch around the edge using a 1 mm (1/32”) seam allowance.

Fold the pocket lining up, align the edges, and stitch around using 1 cm (3/4”) seam allowance to form the pocket.

Your zipper pocket is now ready!
